Jordan Peterson On The Easy Way To Stop Watching P…

The video below opens with the following question being posed to Jordan Peterson, “what advice would you give to someone looking to quit porn?” To which his response is that, “it isn’t that you’re trying to quit porn, it’s not the right way to think about it. The right way to think about it is that you’re trying to figure out how to have a better life.”

Jordan Peterson makes reference to the ‘Future Authoring’ program. He understands that one of the best ways to be conscious of your thoughts is to write them down. This will force you to articulate what you are thinking and why you are thinking it. As opposed to having this thought-salad in your mind, when you write, you will have to extract thoughts and articulate them in a way that orders them and separates them into individual ideas. This in itself will cause you to evaluate your thoughts.

He speaks about the program and the benefits of writing about what your life could be like in 3 to 5 years, if you took care of yourself by getting your act together and not doing things that you know to be harmful. The program also asks you to write about the hell you could be in if you didn’t adjust your behavior for the better and didn’t get your act together.

The reason writing about this is important is because “porn isn’t the issue. The issue is that you’re not living your life the way you want to. So you need a vision of life that is more compelling than the porn and you need a counter-vision to that frightens you.”

If you’re asking about how to stop any potential addiction, you must be of the assumption that it is creating negative impacts or consequences in your life. This is why you need a well thought out story in your mind about where your life could be in 3 to 5 years if you were to stop, and where your life could be in 3 to 5 years if you don’t.

If you are able to articulate these ideas, it will be easier to determine why this behavior is negatively affecting your life. It could be embarrassment, shame a greater feeling of being socially isolated. According to Jordan Peterson you should think about it as “cleaning up your psyche and your behavior, rather than merely stopping porn.”
